During the 2016 dig, this object started to emerge from the soil.
At the beginning of our 2017 public dig, an archaeologist removed sod to reveal more of this object.
The archaeologist marks the area of sod he will remove.
One of the participants is learning what is being done.
Now he is lifting the sod.
Volunteers carefully remove the soil, one layer at a time.
A crowd gathers as more of the piece emerges.
Once the object is fully revealed, an archaeologist can begin to document it while it is still in place.
